Elegantní euroskepse

V sobotní příloze LN Orientace vyšel článek prezidenta Klause o našem problému s Evropou. Prezident Klaus nejenom že soustavně a konzistentně prezentuje svůj zásadně skeptický pohled na sjednocenou Evropu (měli bychom - poučeni Klausem - říkat výlučně Evropskou unii), on tak činí i atraktivním jazykem, elegantní argumentací a přesvědčivým stylem. Byť by dnes český přemýšlivý ale středně-proudový občan hledal sebevíc, nenajde na domácím myšlenkovém trhu přitažlivější souhrnný pohled na "naše místo v Evropě". Poněkud vybledlá vize soziale Marktwirtschaft, kterou na myšlenkový trh nesli rytíři smutné postavy zvíci Vladimíra Špidly, zatím nemohla v našem prostředí zapustit kořeny, nemaje pravdové opory v intelektuálních elitách, které by se za toto označení nestyděly.

Když člověk potom čte například Reichovo Dílo národů a v přímém přenosu sleduje smysluplné důvodění ve prospěch progresivního zdanění, obnovení sociální solidarity, přijetí odpovědnosti "symbolických analytiků" za stav v jakém se nacháejí méně afluentní vrstvy společnosti, nemůže se ubránit dojmu, že taková díla dnešní čeští mocenští praktikové z řad sociálních demokratů prostě nečtou nebo jim tato díla připadají jako příliš vzdálená, než aby se jimi inspirovali pro stávající situaci "hic et nunc".

Nejsem přiznívcem sociální demokracie. Mám pocit, že se sociálně-demokratickým politickým přesvědčením kráčí ruka v ruce cynické přesvědčení o přirozeném sklonu člověka zásadně nekonat dobro, o něž se musí tudíž postarat státní super-ego. Ač praxe Václava Klause z minulých let nemá od mnoha sociálně-demokratických politik daleko, jeho současná zarputilá polemika s "cosa nostra" sjednocené Evropy je strašně sexy.

Nemoc jako cesta k uzdravení - pokud to tak je, tak jsem dnes ušel dobrých 20 - 30 kilometrů v blátě a dešti. Měl jsem ale goretexové obutí a pláštěnku. To bude asi cesta chřipkou.

Dočetl jsem se v novinách, že umřela Elisabeth Kübler - Ross. Její fáze umírání - denial, anger, bargaining, depression and finally acceptance - jsou jedním s nejsmysluplnějších psychologických pozorování a snad se týkají i jiných krizových situací než jen smrti. Přemýšlím o nemoci (triviální, ale i té, která mě nejspíš za několik dekád nakonec dostane) a jsem rád, že nikdo nejsme na cestě sám.

No tak v blogu si snad můžu dovolit být i sentimentální, ne?

A bit unintentionally but definitely yes - this is an Eurosceptic blog. The European idea wears especially thin when one compares it to the ethos of the American idea - as documented by The Declaration of Independence or The Federalist Papers, for example. Hardly anyone can seriously deny that the benfits the EU members hope to reap from the alliance are mainly economical. When the idea of an "European citizen" appeared in public discussion (triggered by the outrageous process by which the "d'Estaign Commission" stiched together the EU Constitutional proposal in less than a year), it became clear that there is no single common characteristic which would justify such a concept. The Union is an economic and common trade alliance - it was created as one and intended as one. It should stay that way.

We returned from Spain recently with my wife. I went for a business trip nearby Segovia for two days and then we travelled East to Valencia and spent some time just travelling around and lying on the beach. It was very slow, relaxing and very wonderful. However, I was amazed to see that not many Spaniards seemed to be keen on "integrating" themselves. Barely anyone spoke English (even though I'm sure many spoke French). Their daily rhythms were not unknown to me, but were quite difficult to cope with. Tourist information in Valencia was available in "Castellano" (the kind of Spanish spoken around Madrid, for example) and Catalan language, and French and some other language - but definitely not a minor puzzler.

In Spain I realized how readily people in Czechia embrace the one-size-fits-all pan-European soup, how ardently the Czech media replicate this meme.

In and article in the Blogger Knowledge section Rebecca Blood presents the authoritative and finite list of reasons why someone would maintain a blog: information sharing, reputation building, and personal expression. I have the fourth to add - even though this might be also labeled personal expression in a sense - namely: THERAPY. The healing effect of keeping track of one's unimportant errands and ripples of the mind is beyond question. It keeps me relatively sane. It's not about returning to the state of "perfect health" (in every sense of the word "health") but rather choosing therapy as a way through life.

On joining the European Union on May 1, I believe many Eastern Europeans have contemplated the new situation of their respective countries and the consequences this political move might have. On the very personal level the most salient consequence is the feeling of being further marginalized. I have spoken to quite a few people of my age and above (35+): if one filters out the hysterical reactions of post-communists and not-at-all-post-communists, one has to feel the deepening blues of Eastern Europeans in the face of the ill-conceived integration (which could rather be termed "proliferation of the ritualized euro-bureaucracy").
